Route 9 Corridor Trail

If the Blue Ridge Ridge Trail is about climbing the escarpment, the Route 9 corridor is about the rolling hills and hollows just below it — the gentler, west-facing country between Hillsboro and Purcellville that has become Loudoun's sunset belt. Open at Harvest Gap, where the picture-window taproom frames sunsets over the Hillsboro Gap and a 20-acre farm lake, then drop into Hillsborough's restored early-1800s fieldstone barn for estate wine and beer under one roof. Climb to Petit Domaine's pergolas overlooking the Route 9 foothills (sparkling-only, 21+, bring an appetite), then on to the trail's namesake elevation: 868 Estate, named for the 868-foot hilltop it sits on, with dual Blue Ridge and Short Hill panoramas and some of the county's most celebrated sunsets. Cap the run at Breaux — 404 acres, 2024 Virginia Governor's Cup Nebbiolo, a full kitchen open seven days, and a rare dogs-welcome-indoors room. The stops are close enough that you can genuinely do four in an afternoon; the only hard rule is to be at 868 or Breaux for golden hour.

Time your last stop for the golden hour.

At a glance

  • 868 Estate takes its name from the 868-foot hilltop it sits on — the elevation is the brand.
  • Breaux Vineyards covers 404 acres, making it one of Northern Virginia's largest estates.
  • Four of the five stops face west, so the trail reads as one long sunset.

Getting around: Route 9 is a fast two-lane corridor with short hops between stops — the issue is timing, not distance. Pick a clear evening, start east, and let each stop hand off to the next as the light softens.
