Waterford–Lucketts Loop

This is the trail for people who like their wine country uncrowded. The northern loop between Waterford's National Historic Landmark village and the Lucketts farm corridor trades the destination-estate crowds of Bluemont and Middleburg for gravel roads, restored barns, and working farms. Begin at The Wine Reserve at Waterford, where the 'Wine Lab' serves self-guided test-tube flights against a Blue Ridge and Catoctin backdrop, then roll east to 8 Chains North — a Waterford winery with a dedicated off-leash dog park, a licensed on-site brewery, and the rare distinction of being open seven days. Cross to Hidden Brook's hand-built log cabin in the Lucketts pines (dogs welcome inside, flatbread kitchen, one of the original ten Loudoun wineries), hop to Barnhouse Brewery's 18-acre Lucketts farmette for easy-drinking beer and Saturday live music, and finish at EagleTree, where a French-trained chef runs a genuine restaurant on a working Lucketts farm. Stops are spread a little farther apart here than on the cluster trails, so pick three, take the back roads slowly, and enjoy the county the way it looked a century ago.

At a glance

  • Waterford is a National Historic Landmark village — the loop's southern anchor is a 19th-century Quaker farming settlement.
  • 8 Chains North pairs its winery with a dedicated off-leash dog park and a licensed on-site brewery.
  • Every stop is open Saturday and Sunday, and 8 Chains North pours seven days a week — so the loop works on a weekday too.

Getting around: Distances are short and the back roads are quiet — the loop is genuinely doable in a half-day. Cell signal is spotty in places, so screenshot the route before you leave Leesburg.
